The World’s Most Spectacular Places You Can Only Truly Experience by Sea

At a Glance

The world’s most spectacular coastal destinations often reveal their full beauty from the sea. The French Riviera, Amalfi Coast, Greek Islands, Seychelles and Antarctica each offer unique landscapes, secluded locations and marine experiences. Travelling by yacht provides access to places that can be difficult to reach by land while offering a different perspective of these remarkable destinations.

Best Sea-Based Travel Destinations

Some of the world’s most spectacular destinations cannot be fully appreciated from land. Hidden coastlines, remote islands, dramatic cliffs and secluded beaches often reveal their true beauty when seen from the water.

Travelling by sea gives you access to places that may be difficult or impossible to reach by road or air, while also offering a different view of famous landscapes. From secluded Mediterranean coves to remote tropical islands and icy polar waters, the journey itself becomes part of the experience.

For instance, a superyacht charter on the French Riviera can take you beyond busy tourist areas and closer to nature, letting you see quieter, more untouched surroundings.

In this article, we’ll talk about some of the world’s most remarkable places that are best experienced from the sea and why travelling by water can offer the unique perspective that simply cannot be matched from land.

1. The French Riviera

The French Riviera is famous for its clear Mediterranean waters, colourful coastal towns and dramatic landscapes. While its popular destinations are beautiful from land, seeing the Côte d’Azur from the water offers a completely different view.

Cruising along the coast reveals secluded coves, rocky cliffs, sandy beaches and picturesque towns stretching along the shoreline. From the bays around Villefranche-sur-Mer and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat to the red cliffs of Estérel, the scenery changes with every mile.

The Lérins Islands, just off Cannes, are also easy to explore by yacht, with quiet beaches, clear waters and historic sites.

2. The Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most striking seaside destinations, stretching along the Tyrrhenian Sea from Positano to Vietri sul Mare. Its steep cliffs, colourful villages, small beaches and terraced hillsides create a landscape that’s particularly impressive from the water.

Cruising along this coastline gives you a chance to see Positano’s houses rising above the sea, explore quiet coves and admire the dramatic views from a different perspective. Yacht trips can also reach places such as the Li Galli islands and secluded beaches that are difficult to access by land.

The Amalfi Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its exceptional combination of natural beauty and cultural diversity.

3. The Greek Islands

With around 6,000 islands and islets, Greece offers endless opportunities to explore the coast by sea. While islands such as Santorini and Mykonos are well known, cruising via yacht can also take you towards quieter destinations and secluded bays.

The Small Cyclades, for example, are known for sheltered beaches, clear waters and peaceful anchorages. Milos is another highlight, with dramatic coves and sea caves, including the famous Kleftiko, which is best explored by sea.

A yacht also makes it easier to reach beaches that cannot be accessed by road, giving you more freedom to stop for a swim, snorkel or simply enjoy the scenery away from the crowds.

4. The Seychelles

The Seychelles is made up of 115 islands, many surrounded by coral reefs and secluded beaches. While islands such as Mahé, Praslin and La Digue are popular with visitors, travelling by sea allows you to discover quieter parts of the archipelago.

The Outer Islands are particularly remote and can be difficult to reach by other means. Closer to the main islands, places such as Ste. Anne Marine National Park and Curieuse offer excellent opportunities for swimming, snorkelling and seeing marine life.

Curieuse is also home to giant tortoises, while Ste. Anne’s waters are known for colourful coral and sea turtles.

5. Antarctica and the World’s Remote Coastal Wonders

Antarctica is one of the most remote places on Earth, and much of its coastline can only be experienced by sea. Most visitors travel by ship to the Antarctic Peninsula, where they can see towering icebergs, glaciers, snow-covered mountains and vast stretches of untouched coastline.

Travelling through Antarctic waters also provides opportunities to spot penguins, seals and seabirds in their natural habitat. The experience changes with the weather, sea ice and wildlife, making every journey different.

Visits are carefully managed under the Antarctic Treaty System, with strict guidelines designed to protect the fragile environment and wildlife.

To Sum Up

Some of the world’s most remarkable destinations are best understood from the water. From the colourful coastline of the French Riviera and Amalfi Coast to the secluded bays of Greece, the tropical waters of Seychelles and the remote landscapes of Antarctica, travelling by sea offers a unique perspective.

It provides access to hidden places, unforgettable scenery and experiences that can be difficult to find on land.
